Small farms receive agricultural support and process through our partner to showcase this vibrant and beautiful country.

Burundi is a small, landlocked country in East Africa. Depending on the metrics employed, it ranks amongst the poorest nations in the world. Having spent a fair amount of time in Burundi, the team at Necessary thinks this nation, which is roughly a quarter the size of the state of Pennsylvania, has far more riches than can be measured by GDP per capita. Burundi is a vibrant, beautiful country, with beautiful people, culture, and coffee! This fact does not, however, take away from the economic realties and hardships faced in the country. For this reason, Necessary has teamed up with a coffee producer that is paying more to farmers than anyone else in this stunning country.

In some countries coffee farmers grow, process, and sell their own coffee. In many East African countries, and elsewhere, coffee farmers deliver coffee fruit to a producer who will process the fruit, turning it into the exportable product we know and love. We have partnered with one such producer who is not only paying incredibly high prices to farmers, but is also providing free agronomical support.

At Necessary we work with a small group of trusted supply chain partners who share our commitment to the pursuit of long-term, mutually beneficial business relationships with the coffee producing communities that we buy from.

Our foundational sourcing partnerships go back multiple years. Though Necessary was founded in 2019, our sister company, Passenger, has existed since 2014. During countless trips to coffee producing countries, our sourcing team has been presented with the same question over and over: "what will it take for you to buy more of our crop." Necessary was created to answer this question—to be a home for these delicious coffees that are equally deserving of a good price, and present the everyday flavors most coffee consumers look for.

Since our start in 2019, all Necessary coffees have been sourced in close collaboration with the same small group of supply chain partners: Osito Coffee and the Divino Niño producer group in Colombia, the Long Miles Coffee Project in Burundi, and the Kata Muduga Farmer’s Cooperative Union in Ethiopia.
